The main aim of the Art Department at Cumnor is to provide the children with a treasure chest of skills and opportunities to develop their creativity and imagination so each child can experience success in learning and achieve their full artistic potential. The children are encouraged to develop their own skills, ideas and knowledge of a wide range of materials, processes and techniques using both 2D and 3D media – including drawing, painting, pastels, printmaking, sculpture, pottery, mosaics, photography and screenprinting.
All the children in the Prep School enjoy a double period of Art a week where they learn to investigate their subject matter by looking and drawing from observation. Those who show interest in further developing their artistic potential are encouraged to attend artistic activities and Art Occupations.
The children are encouraged to study and appreciate art and art history. They have opportunities to visit galleries and exhibitions. In Year 8 pupils research an artist/sculptor/photographer or architect and produce a painting or sculpture in the style of the artist and a written project.
Children’s work is displayed throughout the year. There are opportunities for children to enter art competitions, to exhibit work in the local community and galleries and to work with visiting artists.
In the last 25 years, around 50 Art scholarships have been won by pupils to their senior schools, including in recent years ones to King’s Canterbury, Sevenoaks School, Eastbourne College, Canford and Lancing College.
