Access to books and the encouragement of the habit of reading: these two things are the first and most necessary steps in education and librarians, teachers and parents all over the country know it. It is our children’s right and it is also our best hope and their best hope for the future.
Like Michael Morpurgo, we, at Cumnor, believe that by instilling a love of stories and reading in our children from the earliest age, we are giving them the very best possible start in life. Reading not only enables us all to learn and grow as people, it can also bring life-long pleasure.
Closely linked to this core philosophy, is our commitment to providing our children with the key skills required to become keen and able writers, active speakers and listeners, and enthusiastic and independent learners.
All our teachers of English are passionate about their subject and, through their lessons, hope to inspire as well as teach.
English Specialist Teachers:
We are enjoying and benefitting from our wonderful new library. Our librarian, Penny Mussell, works closely with teachers and children so that the library is becoming an essential and popular area of the school.
Author visits are immensely popular here. We have been lucky enough to see and listen to a number of amazing authors. They have undoubtedly entertained and inspired the children. What could be better than seeing children’s faces rapt with amazement as they listen to stories straight from the authors’ mouths?
