Design technology

Practical and future-focused, DT at Cumnor is designed for a fast-changing world where agility and creativity is key.

Under visionary leadership, DT at Cumnor has gone from strength to strength. We work with real life problems and projects relevant for today’s world – with sustainability in mind.

Housed in our dedicated STEM facility, our state-of-the-art DT lab is unrivalled in a prep school setting and is a hive of activity, innovation and creative confidence. With our open-door policy, pupils can drop in whenever they have a moment – so break times are never quiet!

Our DT program focuses on giving pupils the technical knowledge and skills to bring their ideas to life. Building their understanding of resistant materials, graphics, electronics and computer-aided design and manufacture using lasers, we give them the tools to innovate.

This practical, future-focused approach not only brings unusual agility in problem-solving to all our children. It has also brought the school significant scholarship success, too, with no less than five DT scholarships in the last year alone, to leading senior schools including Brighton College and King’s Canterbury.

A racing start

Now a regular fixture in Cumnor’s STEM calendar, our annual go-kart project pits together teams of Year 6 pupils to dismantle and re-build a working kart, then test and race it. Challenging their scientific and mathematical knowledge throughout, the project culminates in a competitive race.

This year it was off to Goodwood to hone their driving skills as they competed in the drag race, slalom, chicane sprint, lap of champions and pit-stop challenge.
