Music

The Music Department plays an important part in school life and is dedicated to engaging and inspiring pupils, building on their natural enthusiasm.

Music at Cumnor taps into children’s natural love of music and encourages them to explore further. We focus not just on technical knowledge, but help children to build their own musical language to express their thoughts and ideas.

Through weekly music lessons in our historic Music Barn, children develop an awareness of a wide range of musical styles and eras as well as the technical and theoretical knowledge to support their performing and composing skills.

With nine wide ranging ensembles each week and over 80% of Year 3 and 4 pupils playing a musical instrument, we are helping our children to express their ideas and opinions about music, all while developing their musical vocabulary and listening skills. The results speak for themselves.

Music runs through all parts of our school and we are inordinately proud of the pupils that have gone onto win Music Scholarships to schools including King’s Canterbury, Ardingly, Brighton College and Eton.

The joy of learning

Our Music provision comes in many shapes in sizes. From exploring and mastering a new instrument – from piano to harp, and electric guitar to gamelan – to all types of singing, as soloists, choristers and in musical theatre.

A busy calendar of events gives every child the chance to perform, from our informal coffee concerts to instrument-specific recitals, fully staged musicals and our seasonal showcases, Winter Wonderland and the Summer Serenade.

Community Music Day

The highlight of the musical calendar is our Community Music Day. Hosted at Arundel Cathedral, it brings together professional and amateur musicians, children, and adults from across the county for an intensive one-day community music event. In 2023 we staged a wonderful production of ‘Noye’s Fludde’, followed by the rousing ‘Symphonic Adiemus’ in 2024.

The concert was a splendid moment for our family, leaving us with memories we will cherish forever. The performance was truly outstanding, a reflection of the hard work and talent of all involved.
