Building Connections & Confidence

As an integral part of our bespoke Year 7 and 8 curriculum, Kudos, the Spring Term has seen us launch a new Peer Mentoring scheme. Providing senior pupils with an opportunity to develop self-awareness while taking on meaningful responsibilities within the school, the initiative is fostering leadership, empathy and community spirit.

Having completed training in the Autumn Term to equip them with the necessary skills for mentoring, over 20 Peer Mentors were interviewed and appointed. Two months on, as the program takes full effect, our Peer Mentors have thrown themselves into their service, forming close bonds with younger pupils across the school, dedicating time each week to their assigned classes, offering support both in the classroom and during break times.

The benefits are wide reaching. By acting as a point of contact and a source of support, Peer Mentors are helping to nurture a sense of belonging and confidence in their mentees, all while supporting their communication and problem-solving skills and building emotional intelligence. By actively listening, providing constructive feedback, and offering a reassuring presence, they are making a tangible difference in the school community.

The relationships formed through this initiative are enriching both the Mentors and their mentees. Younger pupils gain confidence by interacting with older students who model values of kindness, generosity, and service. At the same time, mentors develop leadership qualities that will serve them well in the future.

This initiative exemplifies the heart of the Cumnor community, encouraging connection, inspiring confidence and shaping the next generation of compassionate, capable leaders.
