Learning adventures

The Early Years, encompassing Nursery and Reception, are about introducing learning by stimulating children, drawing on their intrinsic and boundless curiosity at this age.

Transitioning seamlessly from Cumnor Nursery and other settings, we continue to place significant value on learning through play. Now, though, we layer it with new methodologies, such as whole class and small group work, direct teaching and child-initiated exploration.

As children progress through the Pre-Prep, we continue to build on their experiences, validating each learning moment and supporting each and every one of them to feel special and proud.

We think of it as an adventure, and like all adventures, each child’s path will be different. It is this individualised approach that sets the Cumnor experience apart.

Tailored support

Our highly skilled specialist Early Years teachers provide challenge alongside positive support and a guiding hand. We listen carefully, and through formative and standardised assessments, we know exactly where each individual child is in their learning journey. We tailor our support where needed, and stretch and challenge for extended learning. We are unapologetic in our ambitions for every child to keep reaching beyond each achievement.

Rigour and breadth

Just like the Prep school, our central theme is rigour in breadth. Beyond our engaging, creative and interactive curriculum content, we make sure that learning is broadened by a wealth of specialist extra-curricular subjects including weekly timetabled Music, Sport, Drama, French and swimming.

Our enrichment programme is second to none, offering activities including Lego robotics and coding, Spanish, street dance, yoga and football.

Outdoor learning

Right from the start, we imbue our Pre-Prep children with a love of the great outdoors, with weekly sessions at our school in the woods, Woodpeckers. Here, they begin to embrace creativity and learning through outdoor play and explore the world around them.

Sessions at Woodpeckers are always centred on the individual child. Regular visits to our woods provide an opportunity for self-discovery, holistic growth and supported risk taking, whatever the weather!

The teachers are knowledgeable, approachable and determined to enable my children to achieve their best. I find their positive outlook inspiring and I can see my children being allowed to grow, explore, make mistakes and develop.
