Academic excellence

We bring our vast collective experience and expertise to every child, to meet their specific needs. They will be part of a culture that is built on rigour in breadth.

From the moment your child enters Cumnor Prep, they will be part of a culture that is built on rigour in breadth – that is, conscious learning from all their experiences, both academic and co-curricular.

We take time to listen, observe and understand. We provide the stretch and the scaffolding to support learning and help each child perform to achieve their full potential.

Aspirations and standards are high, with all subjects taught by experts, in and out of the classroom. This sits within a carefully structured timetable that balances core Common Entrance knowledge and skills with the needs of the world that your child will step into – to enable children of all abilities and talents to flourish.

Every child at Cumnor Prep also receives wellbeing lessons every week. This is a crucial part of our pastoral provision – something we take seriously and are very proud of. It is there to support children to develop self-awareness, and build their own, personal strategies to manage their social and emotional health as they grow.

Transition years

The transition from Pre-Prep to Year 3 brings with it greater expectations, as the pace quickens and the curriculum broadens. Our role is to support children every step of the way.

We offer a hybrid Form Teacher model that allows for greater freedom as the years progress, to encourage independence and self-sufficiency in all aspects of school life. Our highly individualised approach means that every facet of a child’s progress is closely monitored – namely academic progress, engagement, wellbeing and mental health.

Pre-Test preparation

In Year 5 we begin to think in earnest about pupils’ applications to their future senior schools. Lessons in Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning supplement our English and Maths teaching, the four elements of the ISEB Pre-Test and other senior school entrance tests. To prepare pupils fully, we use online platforms that train and mirror the Pre-Test style and quality of questioning.

We regularly share data and progress with parents so that they can see how their child is progressing, and invite meetings with the Headmaster to discuss senior school options and choices.

Alongside the academic preparation, pupils also receive lessons and practice in interview techniques, group tasks, escape rooms and other in-person assessments they might encounter at a senior school entrance day. All of this is designed to build familiarity and confidence, so that our young people can meet these moments fully prepared, relaxed and able to show their best selves.

Kudos curriculum

We are proud to offer a unique educational proposition to pupils in Years 7 and 8. One that prepares them fully for the future in their senior schools and well beyond.

Kudos is the product of years of experience. Designed to fulfil every pupil’s potential during these critical senior Prep School years, it offers a truly holistic two-year program, in which children are fully prepared in every dimension of school life – academically, emotionally, creatively, physically, socially and culturally.
