Design Technology

Housed in our purpose-built STEM building, The Peake, Cumnor’s bespoke Design Technology Department is a hive of activity, creative confidence and innovation.

As with our Art Department, children are instilled with the technical knowledge, skills and opportunity to design, create and realise their ambitions, with recent DT Scholarships secured to a range of senior schools including Brighton College and Tonbridge.

Children are taught a range of skills and disciplines including resistant materials, graphics, electronics and computer aided design and manufacture using a laser. One of the highlights of the year is undoubtedly our annual go-kart project which requires pupils to work together in teams to build a working kart, test and race it, putting their scientific and mathematical knowledge to the test and culminating in a competitive race at Plumpton each year.

As a Department, we try to work with real life problems and make projects as relevant as possible for today’s world, with an element of sustainability in mind. Innovation and intuitive thinking are crucial to our approach, but we don’t lose sight of traditional skills. We run an open door policy and pupils can access the department whenever staff are available.
