The Cumnor Foundation

The Cumnor Foundation is the cornerstone of our fundraising and philanthropy. Dedicated to creating transformational bursaries, the Foundation is unique in its ambition of securing full financial assistance for a child’s education at an independent school from the ages of 8 to 18.

Established in 2016 as a registered charity, the Foundation has already made a mark, creating life-changing opportunities for numerous children.

Each year, we offer up to two fully funded Foundation Scholarships to children with the potential, but otherwise not the means, to join Cumnor.

Our Scholarships provide 100% funding for a child from Year 4 (aged 8+) to Year 8 (aged 13) at our school. Thereafter, we facilitate a move to a local Sussex or national independent senior school, subject to meeting the entry criteria of each school, where they join that senior school’s own fee assistance programme.

This dedicated guidance and support in identifying the best senior schools, facilitating not just 5 years of fully funded independent education, but in fact 10 years, up to age 18 is what stands our Foundation apart. Alongside is the vital, unwavering support provided by our mentor families and staff body.

At the age of 11, I received a transformational bursary to attend an independent senior school and full financial support until the age of 18. This opportunity had a huge impact on me, expanding my horizons, increasing my confidence and enabling me to fulfil my potential. I am very proud to lead the efforts to expand the Foundation Scholarship programme at Cumnor and help even more talented children in the future.

Hear from our Foundation Scholars

Being at Cumnor has allowed me to discover who I am as a person, and what I can be in the future. I’ve discovered my love for acting and have had a chance to branch out into a musical journey, learning to sing, and this is just one of many things that I wouldn’t have been able to do at my previous school.
Over time I’ve realised just how lucky I am. Now that I am moving to my next school, it feels like it has gone past so quickly. I am excited about my next chapter!
I’ve had so many subjects and activities to choose from. It has really stretched my mind. Being here encourages me to think with more curiosity. I’ve learnt a lot about myself. I used to lack confidence, but have been encouraged to try so many new things.
The Foundation Scholarships programme provides a rare opportunity and I feel lucky to have this chance. I hope more children can have these opportunities. The scholarship hasn’t just helped me, it has give my family more belief.
I want to say thank you in as many ways as possible to those who support the programme. This programme is about accepting everyone and being inclusive. It has changed so many lives and each of us have our own story to share.
We know that our Foundation Scholarships don’t just make a difference to the child who receives them, they have a real ‘ripple’ effect within families and communities.

Our Foundation Scholars bring a fresh perspective into the classroom. They don’t necessarily see things in the same way as their peers. They’ve got different life experiences, and their contributions can be unique.
— Cumnor Teacher
The Cumnor Foundation Scholarship is life changing for all those it touches. Our daughter is not the only one to benefit; the opportunity has enriched all our lives including siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
— Foundation Scholar Parent
As a teacher, it has been such a pleasure to see Foundation Scholars grow in confidence – to see how much they change, to see how they taken hold of opportunities. I have great pride in what they achieve academically and outside the classroom. It has been a privilege to be part of their journey.

It is an honour to be part of the selection process for the Foundation Scholarships; I find it to be an opportunity for real joy and celebration of individuals.
